LPAs for Health and Welfare: “Choice not Chance”

The Incapacity Crisis – A Nation Unprepared

The Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) campaign “Choice not Chance” is raising awareness of the importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney for Health & Welfare (LPAs). The SFE is a national association of independent lawyers specialising in older and vulnerable client law.

Health & Welfare LPAs allow you to express your wishes for your end of life care and medical treatment and you can appoint your loved ones and people you trust to be your voice in the event that you lose the ability to make your own decisions regarding your care and welfare.

Every 3 minutes somebody in the UK develops dementia, yet only around 3% of people in this country have a Health & Welfare LPA in place. Solicitors for the Elderly’s latest campaign has revealed that a staggering 65% of people incorrectly believe that their next of kin can specify what they would have wanted if they are no longer able to and 73% of the public would like a family member to make medical and care decisions on their behalf.

Do those you love know how you would wish to be cared for in later life? It is important to have this discussion and not wait until it may be too late. If you would like to discuss how you can make a Health & Welfare LPA to cover future care and welfare wishes please contact us and one of our experts can advise and assist you through the whole preparation and registration process.

Please telephone 020 8939 4000 and ask to speak with one of our private client solicitors or send an email enquiry to frances.hemus@carterbells.co.uk.
